Steve Marshall – Alabama Attorney General

Journal Attorney – Steve Marshall became Alabama’s 48th Attorney General on February 10, 2017. Originally from Atmore, he graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1987 and the University of Alabama School of Law in 1990. From 2001 to 2017, he served as the District Attorney for Marshall County. At 36, he was the second youngest person to hold this position in Alabama.

As District Attorney, Marshall built a reputation for being tough on crime. He established the Marshall County Major Crimes Unit, the Marshall County Computer Forensics Lab, and the Marshall County Crystal Meth Task Force. He was a key figure in passing legislation that required a driver’s license for the purchase of crystal meth ingredients, which also created a purchase database. This legislation led to a 90% decrease in crystal meth labs in Alabama over five years.

Marshall also played a significant role in the Brody Act, which makes criminals accountable for harming or killing an unborn baby and the mother. He supported the Marshall County Coalition Against Domestic Violence and advocated for Kelley’s Law, making it a capital crime to murder someone with a protective order against the perpetrator. The law was named after a Marshall County resident who was a victim of domestic violence.

Additionally, AG Marshall chaired the Alabama Criminal Justice Information System (ACJIC) and is a member of the Alabama Sentencing Commission.

He has a daughter named Faith and attends LifePoint Church in Albertville.
