Journal Attorney – On April 23, 2021, Rob Bonta was sworn in as California’s 34th Attorney General, becoming the first person of Filipino descent and the second Asian-American to hold the position.
Attorney General Bonta’s commitment to justice and fairness was inspired by his parents, who were actively involved in significant social justice movements in America. Influenced by the United Farm Workers and the civil rights movement, his parents taught him to fight against injustice and protect those who are vulnerable. This motivation led him to become a lawyer, with the aim of rectifying historical wrongs and supporting those who have been harmed. Bonta worked his way through college, graduating with honors from Yale University and attending Yale Law School.
In the State Assembly, Bonta led reforms to promote justice and fairness in government and institutions. As Attorney General, he prioritizes holding those who abuse their power accountable. He has challenged powerful interests, advanced systemic change, pursued corporate accountability, defended workers, targeted major polluters, and combated racial injustice. Bonta has been a national leader in criminal justice reform, banning private prisons and detention centers in California, and advocating for the elimination of cash bail. He has championed racial, economic, and environmental justice, as well as the rights of immigrant families, renters, and working Californians.
Before his Assembly service, Bonta was a deputy city attorney for San Francisco, representing the city and its employees and protecting Californians from exploitation and racial profiling.
Born in Quezon City, Philippines, Bonta immigrated to California as an infant. He is the son of a Filipino mother and a father who instilled in him the importance of public service. Bonta is married to Mia Bonta, and they have three children, Reina, Iliana, and Andres, as well as their dog Legolas.
